Over 100 tonnes of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown into the street. A water cannon signals the beginning of the event and for 60 minutes it's game on as participants can throw tomatoes that anyone and anything within the main square. The water cannons come out again to wash down the streets - and its red-faced population.

Hog Parade

Pigs come out to play during one of the biggest events of The Philippines' Malolos province's food festival. You would be surprised to know that pigs are dressed up as Superman, princesses, kings or bridal parties. As a matter of fact, they even wear make-up - yes, lipstick on a pig - so they are pretty enough for the big parade in town. The festival celebrates the self-sufficiency of the area by displaying its meaty produce. The pigs look dressed to kill for the main event but, in fact, are the ones who eventually end up served on a plate.

When: September
Where: Malolos, The Philippines
